Posmemoria Vegetal

«Los jardines que actualmente alberga la rectoría de la Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación – UMCE, Ex Pedagógico, durante la dictadura civil-militar fueron utilizados como sede de la FACH, desde donde se vigilaba el campus Macul. Según los relatos de funcionarios y funcionarias, en estas áreas se llevaron a cabo arrestos y torturas. Un árbol en particular, tallado con un poema -un proverbio chino presumiblemente escrito en su tronco en los años 60- se erige como testigo de estos acontecimientos. Este árbol ha sido seleccionado para dialogar en torno a la memoria de las comunidades y la memoria que guardan las formas de vida vegetal presentes en este campus.
En este espacio de formación y pulmón verde de la comuna de Ñuñoa en Santiago, conviven una diversidad de especies vegetales que interactúan diariamente con las personas que lo habitan. Relaciono el concepto de posmemoria, propuesto por la investigadora feminista Marianne Hirsh, y que el investigador y filósofo Ángel Álvarez- Solís, relaciona con las nociones de fitopoética y crítica vegetal, a partir de la idea de que vivimos con otras formas de vida que también recuerdan. La obra está desarrollada desde la acción performativa del frottage (frotado) sobre tela, capturando las texturas de letras talladas en el árbol. El mensaje tallado “No importando la situación, las personas deben mantener su buen carácter”, es trasladado además, a una fotografía, siendo ambos soportes intervenidos con bordado a mano, junto a un video de la acción».

Vegetable Postmemory

«The gardens that currently house the rectory of the Metropolitan University of Educational Sciences – UMCE, Former Pedagogical, during the civil-military dictatorship were used as the headquarters of the FACH, from where the Macul campus was monitored. According to the accounts of officials, arrests and torture were carried out in these areas. One tree in particular, carved with a poem – a Chinese proverb presumably written on its trunk in the 60s – stands as a witness to these events. This tree has been selected to dialogue about the memory of the communities and the memory held by the forms of plant life present on this campus.
In this training space and green lung of the Ñuñoa commune in Santiago, a diversity of plant species coexist that interact daily with the people who live there. I relate the concept of postmemory, proposed by the feminist researcher Marianne Hirsh, and that the researcher and philosopher Ángel Álvarez-Sólís, relates to the notions of phytopoetics and plant criticism, based on the idea that we live with other forms of life that also remember. The work is developed from the performative action of frottage (rubbing) on fabric, capturing the textures of letters carved into the tree. The carved message «No matter the situation, people must maintain their good character,» is also transferred to a photograph, both supports being intervened with hand embroidery, along with a video of the action.»
